What would you like your character's tag to be?: john kennex
Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present):
Kennex is officially a detective for The City, specializing almost exclusively in homicides. He is recently returned to his job, after having survived a brutal police attack that not only caused him to lose his partner, but also his right leg and about 17 months of his life. In a coma for almost two years, Kennex was not entirely prepared for a return into the police force. But he does what he has to.
Not much is known about Kennex's past except that he had been dating a woman called Anna Moore, whom he loved, and before the accident, he was betrayed by her. It is said that she was the one who had set off the attack on the police force and may be working with inSyndicate, a dangerous criminal organization that deals with a number of high-tech crimes such as DNA theft, illegal weapons, and the engineering of nanotech and biotech for weapons use.
Currently he is back to work, all while trying to figure out his own personal case - that of the inSyndicate and Anna's role in all of it, as well as why he was targeted by the organization. His meeting with Anna was definitely arranged, and it might possibly be connected to his father's case.
Every cop is required to have an AI android partner. Most of the police force works with the newer MX-43 models, but after getting pissed off and throwing his model into highway traffic, he is outfitted with an older model (a DRN), ones with 'a synthetic soul' so that he seems a lot more human. The DRN goes by the name 'Dorian', who becomes Kennex's partner and friend.
Character's personality:
Kennex is smart, resourceful, brave and a little reckless. He also suffers from trauma-onset OCD and PTSD, as well as depression, mental atrophy and has a psychological rejection to a synthetic body part (his leg). He has recently started taking membliss (a drug) to start remembering things his memory has tried to forget, pre-coma. Kennex is basically a basket of joy and a psychotherapist's dream to analyze.
He wasn't always like this, however. In high school he appeared to be something of an athletic star, known on track + field as the 'White Cheetah'. He shows the capacity to be a very caring person with a gentle side; he is just incredibly awkward when having to bring it up in situations, such as those dealing directly with kids. (But he seems to like them anyway.)
He is incredibly loyal and an excellent friend to have as he would not leave any man behind and strives to protect those he cares about to practically no limit. See: his partner. For his partner, Kennex lost his right leg, which was later outfitted with a synthetic one - a robotic prosthetic that almost looks and functions like a real leg.
Kennex is a good detective: clever, resourceful and quick to pick up on clues that pertain to his cases. He is also a good leader, if sometimes a bit of a terse one. However, it also seems that he's the type to prefer solo missions above all, and he does not easily submit to a leader or following orders - unless he can respect them (and the people who give them). See: Sandra Maldonado, whom he respects vs Richard Paul, whom he reaaally doesn't.
Kennex is also terrible with women. He is awkward and honestly a bit insecure in that area, though a good deal of his hesitations are likely due to being duped and betrayed by his last girlfriend, who ended up turning his entire team into inSyndicate.
Character's skills/abilities/powers:
He's a highly skilled cop, so anything a cop can do, he can do. He is good with close hand-to-hand combat, weapons (especially firearms), and solving problems. Talking, giving orders, being something of a reluctant but decent leader.
Women and kids tend to boggle him, but he does have a soft spot for kids, when he can get to them. Women on the other hand ... awkward. Also, he's not the best at being 'tender' but this is not to say he doesn't have the capability, if he wanted to.
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.:
- His gun
- Synthetic leg + charger
- Badge
- a bottle of membliss pills
Are you bringing your character to
ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?:
No.
If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s):
N/A
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them?
Kennex is a character trope that I am not always used to playing, but intrigues me nevertheless and shares - at the core - a lot of the same values I tend to be attracted to in a character, which lets me know that I'll be capable of playing his character. Things such as his awkwardness, and his softer, gentle side that is hidden under a layer of stoicism and grumpiness are things I tend to really enjoy playing.
As he is already quite well-versed in science fiction elements, being surrounded by things such as holodecks and replicators won't actually come to him as a huge culture shock. He isn't actually all that anti-social either; he would prefer to only talk to people for work vs socialization, but that doesn't mean he's not capable of actually being friendly. This, I think, would make him pretty interesting to explore in Ten Forward, where he will try to look at the situation like he would a case, and then suddenly find himself caring a lot about a number of people. Oops - sudden feelings!
Writing Sample #1: Kennex in test threads, particularly the one with him and Philip.
Writing Sample #2 (optional):
